Azra Games, the studio behind NFT RPG Legions & Legends, has raised another $10m from top-tier investment firms.
The seed funding injection was led by Andreessen Horowitz (A16z) and brings to $25m the total Azra has raised since its founding just over a year ago.
Azra is led by Mark Otero, a former EA executive and game industry veteran. Expectations for Legions & Legends are high based on Otero’s track record, however game details are still thin on the ground.
According to a blog post by Otero, his team developed a playable pre-Alpha at the end of 2022.
“Azra Games is on a mission to build the 1st ‘large toy box’ RPG experience. Legions & Legends is … inspired by our childhood play with toys of all sizes.”
In announcing the funding top-up, A16z described the game as an “NFT-oriented collectible and combat RPG”. Otero reportedly played down crypto game elements in an interview with Fortune, although it also appears that the blockchain game integration was a key driver for him in starting the project.
Azra has released an NFT collection – The Hopeful – which it styles a “Play Forever Pass”, a universal game pass. Like many studios, it appears to be planning multiple games. At time of writing, the floor price for a Hopeful NFT was just below $500.
