Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has yet to comment publicly on reports his Twitter/X account was hacked at the weekend, in an attack that cost some of his followers at least $691,000.
In a since-deleted post to Buterin’s feed, users were offered exclusive access to NFTs from software firm Consensys.
Followers who clicked on the link to mint the NFT instead gave hackers access to their wallets.
According to blockchain investigator ZacXBT, losses from the hack total $691,000 so far, including one who lost a CryptoPunk NFT valued at $250,000.

The fake post was first noticed on Saturday (UTC), and was later that day apparently confirmed in a tweet from the account of Buterin’s father, Dmitry.
“Disregard this post, apparently Vitalik has been hacked. He is working on restoring access,“ the tweet read.
It’s not clear how many of Buterin’s 4.9 million followers lost money, but some who were caught out posted warnings, such as the one below.
