Spider-Man 2 swings to fastest-selling Sony game ever

Sony’s Playstation exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has become the company’s fastest-selling game ever, selling 2.5 million copies in its first 24 hours on sale. The sequel beats God of War: Ragnarok’s record of 5.1 million copies sold in its first five days in 2022.

Sony’s first-party games are consistently top-selling and critically acclaimed. Previous titles, such as Spider-Man and The Last of Us Part II, achieved “fastest-selling” status, with 3.3 million and 4 million copies sold in three days, respectively.

Unlike other game developers, Sony doesn’t have to pay platform fees for games distributed on Playstation, so the big sales should have good impact on the bottom line.

The standard version of Spider-Man 2 is available for $70 in the US, with a deluxe version at $80 and a collector’s edition, including a statue, for $230.

Though Sony hasn’t disclosed official numbers, sales of the initial 2.5 million copies at $70 each generated a staggering $175 million in first-day revenue.

Spider-Man 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man, brings players back to New York City to control Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The new game focuses on fast-paced action over stealth, with Spider-Man swinging fluidly from place to place without loading times. The new Web Grabber gadget pulls in enemies from a distance and smashes them together, making it a fun addition to the game. According to reviewers, Spider-Man 2 also features the best-written story in the series yet, even if it gets a bit over-the-top at times.
